Over time, some of my illustrations were lost. Some remained uncollected in cupboards or drawers by the commissioning magazines, others were sold, gifted or perhaps lost in the post. During the 80s, I would take a photocopy of all the illustrations. There is a video of them here. And this is a selection of them…
This was a colour illustration in Verithin pencils of a girl in an olive green striped swimsuit which blended into the boy’s striped t-shirt sitting on the edge of a swimming pool. The illustration wasn’t commission but sent to the agent as a ‘spec’ September 1984. (392).This was a black and white German Staedtler ‘F’ pencil illustration of a young woman leaning over a wall wearing sunglasses looking at a man in a jacket and open shirt. The drawing was made in May 1984 and sold privately in 1986. (354).The black and white illustration from March 1984 of a boy with his head looking sideways at a girl looking shocked with interest against a paint spattered background was inspired by the singers Fay Lovsky and Leif Garrett. (341).This colour pencil illustration was drawn from two models, Nick and Ruth from Ilford against a coastal background in September 1979. It was originally sent as a ‘spec’ to D.C.Thomson’s Blue Jeans and Patches magazines in Dundee, Scotland before being sold to their Jackie magazine for First British Serial Rights in November 1981. It was also sent to U.S.A magazines Teen Beat, 16, Co-ed, Teen Life, Teen, Teen Bag and Tiger Beat as well as O.K!, Generation, Podium and Quinze Ans in Europe. The original was gifted. (075).This colour pencil illustration of a girl in a blue-striped t-shirt with her hair tied by a ribbon being spashed by a muddy dog was commissioned by D.C. Thomson’s Suzy magazine for younger girls after a visit to the magazine in Dundee, Scotland in November 1984. This was sold to IPC’s Oh Boy! magazine and was sent to various magazines including OK! Co-ed and Generation. (063)This colour illustration of a boy on a hilltop was produced as a ‘spec’ and used in Oh Boy! magazine’s summer special. It was also sent to O.K! Age Tendre, Podium, Blondie, Quinze Ans, Club and Generation in Europe. (031).This colour illustration of a boxer with Ilford model Andrea Howell was sent to D.C.Thomson’s Blue Jeans, Jackie in December 1981 and again in May 1983. Also sent to Madchen, Bravo and Rocky in Germany. Sent to IPC magazine’s Oh Boy! magazine in November 1983. (107).In March 1991, this was produced using Gouache paint. It depicts a boy scanning the horizon and a girl in the distance wearing baggy trousers with a hand behind her hair. (533).Black and white pencil drawing of man hastily pulling up trousers with angry woman on phone and another with expression of concern. (534).This ‘on spec’ colour illustration was bought by D.C. Thomson’s Jackie magazine in January 1983. It features the rear view of a girl in high heels, seamed stockings and long dress and a seated boy in ‘Cute’ blue jeans and loafers from shoulders down. The cocktail print is repeated in the dress and boy’s shirt. It represented a slight change in style with the outline of figures drawn with a Rapidograph. (272).A private commission in Decemer 1984 for Kim Weller & Co. based at the Old Loom House in Whitechapel, London. The colour illustration was for a Norwegian restaurant menu. The colour illustration depicts the famous Dance at Bougival, an 1883 oil-on-canvas painting by the French artist Pierre-Auguste Renoir. (410).
